Hawks Stun Golden Bulls

Rachel Gostomski scored 23 points for the Hawks on Thursday.
Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC – The Chowan University women's basketball team grabbed a 66-49 victory over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls on Thursday evening.  The Hawks improve to 7-7 on the season and 3-1 in CIAA play with the victory.  The Golden Bulls move to 12-2 on the season and 2-1 against CIAA play. 

Chowan's win over Johnson C. Smith snapped the Golden Bulls' eight-game win streak and handed them their first CIAA setback of the season and first loss of the year against an NCAA Division II opponent.  The Hawks improve to 4-3 in the series against the Golden Bulls with the win.

Rachel Gostomski led all players in the contest with 23 points for Chowan.  Alisha Mobley followed with 1 4 points while Naima Harrington added nine points.  Summer Curtis tallied 10 rebounds (three offensive, seven defensive) and collected four rebounds in the game. 

Asha Gordon scored 14 points for the Golden Bulls.  Ashley Porter recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive, five defensive) in the setback.

The Hawks grabbed the lead right from the start using a three-pointer by Gostomski.  The Golden Bulls responded with a 6-0 run to regain the lead by the 16:02 mark in the first half.   Gostomski answered with a three-pointer to knot the score and provided the start of an 11-0 run, handing the Golden Bulls a 14-6 deficit with 11:44 remaining before halftime. 

Chowan held a firm grip on the advantage for the remainder of the first half.  The Golden Bulls pulled within three points (16-13) at the 7:50 mark, but the Hawks regained the momentum with Gostomski's three pointer before pulling away 26-15 with 5:35 left in the half.  Mobley's layup just before halftime gave Chowan a 32-26 advantage.   

The Hawks came out firing at the start of the second half, using an 11-0 run to hand Johnson C. Smith a 33-26 deficit. The Golden Bulls were unable to recover and trailed by double-digit points for the remainder of the contest.  Chowan led by as many as 20 points (66-46) at the 2:27 mark before closing out the game with the 66-49 win. 

Chowan takes on Winston-Salem State University on Saturday.  Tip-off for the CIAA crossover contest is slated for 2:00pm.
