Box Score RICHMOND, VA- The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up a 63-60 win over Virginia Union University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 11-10 overall and 7-4 in the CIAA with the victory while the Lady Panthers slip to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in the league after the setback.
A trio of Hawks scored double-digit points in the win.
Alisha Mobley notched her second double-double in as many games with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
RyJae Anderson and
Chantel Roberts each scored 10 points for the Blue and White. Saturday's win marked the Hawks' third consecutive victory.
Ashle Freeman led the effort for the Lady Panthers with 17 points. Trylanda Jennings and Sydney Howard added 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
Chowan shot 44.9% from the floor in the win while holding Virginia Union to a 34.5 shooting percentage over the course of the contest.
Both teams exchanged free throws to open the game. With the score tied 14-14 at the 11:52 mark, Virginia Union used a 6-1 run to pull away 20-15. The five point lead in the first half was the largest lead for either team. The Hawks battled back to pull within one point (24-23) at the 6:28 mark using
Kaela Nelson's jumper.
Rachel Gostomski's three-pointer on Chowan's next possession returned the advantage to the Hawks and propelled the Hawks to a narrow 27-26 lead heading into halftime.
Taylor White's bucket for Virginia Union restored the lead to the Lady Panthers. The advantage proved to be temporary as two baskets by Anderson combined with a three-pointer by
Rachel Gostomski provided a 34-26 cushion for the Blue and White two minutes into the second half. Virginia Union battled back to tie the score 36-36 at the 15:32 mark and built their lead to as many as eight points (48-40) with just under ten minutes left in the game.
Two made free throws by Mobley sparked a 13-0 run for the Blue and White, resulting in a 53-48 advantage with 4:51 remaining in the contest. Chowan extended their advantage to seven points (58-51) by the 2:54 mark but the Lady Panthers refused to go away quietly. Virginia Union tied the score 58-58 using Howard's layup with 1:15 left in the game but the Hawks hung on to clip the Lady Panthers 63-60.
Chowan returns to action on February 7
th when the Hawks travel to Elizabeth City State University. Tip-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 2:00pm.
