Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team extended their win streak to four games on Saturday afternoon with a 53-44 win over Winston-Salem State University. The Hawks advance to 8-7 on the season with the victory and move to 4-1 in CIAA play while the Lady Rams slip to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the league after the setback. Chowan's win over Winston-Salem State was the Hawks' second in program history.
Alisha Mobley led all players in the contest with 17 points while hauling in 12 rebounds (five offensive, seven defensive).
Jordan Payne chipped in 14 points in the victory while
Summer Curtis grabbed 14 rebounds (three offensive, 11 defensive) and four blocks for Chowan.
Dionna Scott and Keshira McNeil each tallied 12 points for Winston-Salem State in the setback.
The Lady Rams grabbed an early 4-0 lead using baskets by Taylar Wells and Dionna Scott. Chowan and Winston-Salem State exchanged baskets until the 15:10 mark when Mobley's made free throw gave the Hawks the 8-7 go-ahead. Though the Lady Rams stayed close on the Hawks' heels, Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the first half and carried a 22-16 advantage heading into halftime.
With 14:42 remaining in the game, Mobley's layup extended Chowan's advantage to eight points (28-20) and two made free throws by Gostomski pushed the Hawks' lead to double-digit points. Holding a 30-20 advantage, a 13-3 run by the Blue and White left the Lady Rams with a 43-23 deficit at the 7:35 mark. Chowan's 20-point lead was the largest of the contest.
The Lady Rams battled back down the stretch to cut the deficit to eight points (50-42) with 1:01 remaining but the damage was done and Chowan closed out the contest with the 53-44 win.
The Hawks conclude CIAA crossover play on January 12th when they take on Livingstone College. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
