Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University football team kicked off the 2014 season with a 26-22 nonconference victory over Fayetteville State University on Saturday evening in Garrison Stadium. The Hawks head to Alderson-Broaddus next week with a 1-0 mark while the Broncos travel to UNC Pembroke with an 0-1 start to the season.
DaSean Martin led the Hawks with 21 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown in the win.
Dain McFarland completed 21-37 passes including a four yard touchdown pass to
Damian Ellis.
Antjuan Randall also had a score for the Blue and White. Nolan led the receiving core with five receptions for 53 yards.
Roderick Lindsey had six solo tackles for the Hawks followed by Marcel Burns with five.
Andre Montgomery had nine carries for 88 yards for the Broncos. Ricardo White caught six passed for 85 yards while Derek Bryant connected on 22-40 pass attempts for 237 yards. Turnovers proved to be costly for the Broncos. After totaling just 10 interceptions on the 2013 season, Bryant accounted for four interception passes in the loss for Fayetteville State on Saturday evening.
Nick Hahula put the Hawks on the board with 4:08 left in the first quarter using a 30-yard field goal. The Broncos worked their way down the field on the next possession and used Bryant's 5-yard pass to Chris Hubert to grab a 6-3 lead just before the end of the first quarter. Antonio Mayo's point after attempt failed.
With Chowan's possession starting at the 14:02 mark in the second quarter, the Hawks orchestrated a 12 play, 53 yard drive resulting in another field goal attempt for Hahula. He made good on it, icing the score 6-6. Fayetteville State added a score and point after attempt with 10:57 left to play in the third quarter. A safety for the Broncos on the next drive extended their lead to 15-6.
JR Williams' punt return at the end of the third quarter led to a two yard touchdown run for Martin, putting the Hawks within striking distance of the Broncos. A seven play, 96 yard drive capped by a 59 yard touchdown pass and point after attempt by Fayetteville State left the Hawks trailing 22-13 late in the contest.
Antjuan Randall's 95 yard kick-off return for a touchdown followed by the point after on the next play put Chowan back within two points of Fayetteville State with 10:40 left in the game.
Fayetteville State fumbled on the next possession, and the Hawks recovered the ball to secure the momentum. The Hawks used a six play, 69-yard drive capped by McFarland's four yard pass to Ellis to take a 26-22 lead. Chowan's defense held the Broncos at-bay for the remainder of the contest, allowing the Hawks to secure the 26-22 victory.
Chowan travels to Alderson-Broaddus on September 13
th to take on the Battlers. Kick-off is slated for 12:00pm.
