Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 68-37 decision to CIAA Northern Division opponent Virginia Union on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks move to 10-10 on the season with the loss and slip to 4-6 against league competition. The Lady Panthers improve to 5-13 overall and move to 2-8 in the CIAA after the victory.
Virginia Union's Ashle Freeman led all players in the contest with 24 points in the victory. Meylse Brown and Lady Walker chipped in 18 and 11 points respectively.
Rachel Gostomski led the effort for the Hawks, scoring 10 points in the loss. She was the lone Chowan player to score double-digit points in the game.
Summer Curtis hauled in 12 rebounds for the Blue and White (six offensive, six defensive).
The Lady Panthers held the Hawks to a mere 10 points in the first half, and kept the Hawks under the double-digit mark until
Kaela Nelson hit a layup with 1:54 before halftime. Chowan shot just 12.9% from the floor in the first half.
The Hawks' struggles continued throughout the second half as they trailed by 20 or more points for the remainder of the contest. A lay-up by Freeman at the 11:55 mark gave the Lady Panthers a 37 point lead (51-14), their largest of the contest. Two made free throws by Brown secured the 68-37 victory for Virginia Union.
The Hawks return to action on February 5
th when they travel to Bluefield State for a nonconference match-p. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
