Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team came up short in a 78-76 non-conference loss to Saint Augustine's University on Tuesday evening. The Hawks slip to 0-5 on the season with the setback while the Lady Falcons even their record at 3-3 on the year.
Alisha Mobley paced the Hawks with 14 points and eight rebounds (five offensive, three defensive) followed by
Chantel Roberts with 13 points.
Jordan Payne grabbed eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive) in the contest while
Naima Harrington and
Danielle Witherspoon each chipped in nine points.
Regime McCombs led all players in the game with 19 points while Terri Jacobs added 16 points in the victory. Porscha Walton posted 14 points for Saint Augustine's. Jacobs hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds (five offensive, eight defensive).
The Lady Falcons scored first in the contest with a layup by Jacobs. A basket by Mobley followed by a made free throw shot gave the Hawks a 3-2 edge. Chowan maintained a narrow lead until Roberts' layup at the 5:10 mark extended the Hawks' advantage to eight points (34-26). The eight point lead was the Hawks' largest of the half.
Saint Augustine's clawed their way back from the deficit. They capped a 12-4 run with a jumper by Walton with 42 seconds remaining before halftime to ice the score 38-38. A layup by Jacobs and a made free throw by LaKiya Rouse gave the Lady Falcons a 41-38 advantage heading into halftime.
The Hawks trailed 50-41 at the 18:07 mark in the second half. Down but not out, Chowan battled back to overcome the deficit. At the 6:38 mark, a Lady Falcon foul led to a free throw opportunity for the Hawks. Payne made good on the attempt, tying the score 65-65.
Both teams exchanged baskets as the second half continued, with neither team leading by more than four points after the 5:08 mark With the score tied 74-74 with 2:20 left in the game, McComb's free throw pushed the Lady Falcons ahead. Saint Augustine's clung to a narrow lead for the remainder of the contest, outlasting the Hawks in the 78-76 win.
Chowan looks to recover on December 5
th when they take on the University of North Georgia at 3:30pm. The Hawks continue play on December 6
th as they take on Clayton State University at 3:30pm.
