Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team earned a 69-48 victory over UNC Pembroke in their home opener on Monday evening. The Hawks improve to 2-6 with the win while the Lady Braves slip to 1-6 on the season with the loss.
Alisha Mobley led all players in the contest with 20 points for Chowan while
Jordan Payne followed with 13 points.
Rachel Gostomski and
Chantel Roberts each chipped in 10 points for the Blue and White.
Naima Harrington led the Hawks with eight rebounds (two offensive, six defensive) while dishing out four assists and scoring five points.
Jasmine Huntley paced UNC Pembroke with 14 points and Kierra Haney and Jazmine Kemp added nine points apiece. Katelyn Mitchell grabbed eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive) followed by Mary Robinson with seven rebounds (two offensive, five defensive).
Mobley put the Hawks on the board first in the contest with a jumper and capitalized on a free throw opportunity to give Chowan an early 3-0 lead. After grabbing the momentum early, Chowan continued to control the pace in the first half. A three-pointer by Gostomski at the 14:18 mark gave the Hawks a six point advantage (14-8). With 8:29 remaining before halftime, a three-pointer by Chantel Robers gave Chowan their largest lead of the half (ten points) and a comfortable 22-12 advantage.
The Hawks enjoyed a 34-25 lead at the start of the second half but the Lady Braves battled back to pull within five points (36-31) at the 17:31 mark. Chowan quickly went to work and answered back to earn a double digit advantage and 42-32 lead with 15:51 left in the contest.
UNC Pembroke was unable to fight back in the remainder of the contest. The Hawks maintained a double-digit lead in the rest of the second half before closing out the game with the 69-48 win.
Chowan returns to action on Wednesday when they host Shepherd University. Game time is slated for 5:30pm in the Helms Center.
