Box Score MILLERSVILLE, PA- The Chowan University women 's basketball team suffered their second setback in as many days with a 49-48 loss to Millersville University on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks are now 0-2 on the young season while the Marauders post a 2-0 record on the year.
Rachel Gostomski led all players in the contest with 20 points and five three-pointers over the course of the afternoon. She also had four steals for the Blue and White.
Alisha Mobley chipped in nine points in the loss and grabbed eight rebounds (five offensive, three defensive).
Carly Gallagher paced the Marauders with 17 points. Shelby Reimer and Sabrina Mehmedovic added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Mehmedovic hauled in 10 rebounds (five offensive, five defensive) and Yasmin Cooper added nine rebounds (four offensive, five defesnve) to aid the effort.
The contest was a battle from start to finish as the Hawks and Marauders fought through 10 lead changes and seven ties over the course of the afternoon.
With the score tied 2-2 at the 17:53 mark in the first half,
Summer Curtis' layup gave the Hawks the lead. Chowan held onto the advantage until Reimer's three-pointer for Millersville put the Marauders ahead 9-8 at the 13:25 mark. Gostomski's three-pointer with 10:00 on the clock returned the advantage to the Hawks once more, but Millersville fought back to take a narrow 21-18 lead heading into halftime.
Millersville opened the second half with a three-pointer by Reimer and layup by Cooper, but Gostomski's back-to-back three-pointers gave the Hawks a 27-26 advantage. The Hawks built their lead to as many as nine points (37-28) as late as the 8:52 mark, but Millersville refused to back down. The Marauders chipped away at the deficit and knotted the score 39-39 with 5:08 left in the game using Gallagher's made free throw.
With the score tied 47-47 and 58 seconds remaining in the contest, Curtis' made free throw gave the Hawks the one point advantage. Gallagher's layup on Millersville's next possession returned the lead to the Marauders. The Hawks were unable to take advantage of their remaining scoring opportunities and suffered the 49-48 loss.
Chowan returns to action on November 21
st when they take on Kentucky State University. Tip-off is slated for 8:00pm in Frankfort, Kentucky.
