Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University football team suffered a 49-33 setback on Saturday afternoon against Elizabeth City State University. The Hawks slip to 1-7 with the loss and move to 0-5 in league play with the CIAA Northern Division loss. The Vikings improve to 4-4 overall and 3-2 against CIAA competition with the victory.
The Hawks tallied 323 offensive yards (153 rushing, 170 passing) in comparison to 479 (295 rushing, 184 passing) by the Vikings.
Ryan Nolan and
Dain McFarland combined for 170 passing yards on the afternoon. Nolan completed eight of 16 pass attempts for 103 yards while McFarland tallied 67 yards after completing six of 10 pass attempts.
Nolan also had 21 carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns in the contest.
Anthony Clanton added 13 carries for 43 yards while
Antjuan Randall totaled five receptions for 28 yards.
Dominique Fulton paced the Hawks defensively with 14 tackles (nine solo, five assisted) while
Andrew Denny notched 10 tackles (nine solo, one assisted to help the cause.
Kenny King led the effort for Elizabeth City State. He totaled 21 carries for 92 yards and three touchdowns while Tyrell Houghton completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 152 yards. Lovie Banks-Rose hauled in six receptions for 82 yards.
Demetrius Hamilton led all players in the contest with 15 tackles (10 solo, five assisted) along with one sack.
With just under ten minutes to play in the first quarter, a 35 yard field goal by
Nick Hahula gave the Hawks a 3-0 advantage. Elizabeth City State answered with 14 unanswered points thanks to two touchdown runs by King and two successful point after attempts by Jeff Flores.
Clanton got the Hawks back in the game at the 8:31 mark in the second quarter. His one yard touchdown run capped a 14 play, 80 yard drive for the Blue and White. Hahula made good on the point after attempt to make the score 14-10.
With 1:34 remaining before halftime, Houghton's 17 yard pass to Javoris Brytant's resulted in a score for the Vikings. The point after was good, leaving the Hawks trailing 21-10. Chowan recovered to answer back with just eight seconds remaining in the quarter with a 36 yard field goal by Hahula.
With a 21-13 advantage after halftime, the Vikings used two touchdown runs (one by Petey Boone and one by Breon Bailey), returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, and added three successful point after attempts to take a commanding 42-13 lead with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Down but not out,
JR Williams' 61 yard punt return with 25 seconds left in the third quarter resulted in a score for Chowan. Hahula made good on the point after attempt to make the score 42-20. A 13 yard touchdown run by Nolan at the 9:43 mark in the fourth quarter capped a six play, 26 yard drive for Chowan. The successful point after attempt by Hahula made the score 42-27.
Elizabeth City State added a score and point after attempt with 1:26 left in the game to pull away 49-27. With 16 seconds left in the game, Nolan added a five yard touchdown run for the Blue and White, but the Hawks still suffered the 49-33 setback.
Chowan looks to recover next Saturday. The Hawks take on Virginia State University in a 2:00pm contest. The CIAA Northern Division match-up will take place on the campus of Virginia State University.
