Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University football team suffered a 39-11 setback at the hands of the Bowie State University Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in CIAA play. The Bulldogs improve to 2-4 on the year and move to 2-1 in the league with the CIAA Northern Division victory.
The Hawks tallied 338 yards of offense in the loss, in comparison to 407 by the Bulldogs.
Dain McFarland completed 13 of 30 passes for 133 yards while
Ryan Nolan hauled in three receptions for 96 yards and one touchdown.
DaSean Martin tallied 19 carries on the afternoon for 83 rushing yards while
Anthony Clanton totaled four carries for 62 yards.
Lydell Washington led the effort for the Hawks defensively with 13 tackles (nine solo, four assisted).
Dominique Fulton and
Roderick Lindsey added 10 tackles apiece to help the cause.
Trevon Bennett threw for 263 yards in the victory for Bowie State, completing 33 of 44 pass attempts with three touchdown passes. Kerrick Pollock led the receiving corps with six receptions for 65 yards while Kayvone Spriggs notched nine carries for 41 yards. Christopher Townsend had seven tackles, all solo, for Bowie State.
The Hawks scored on the opening drive of the contest when Nolan caught a 39-yard heave from Martin. McFarland connected with
Kaine Lombard for a two-point conversion to give Chowan an 8-0 lead at the start of the first quarter.
Mario Diaz-Aviles made three field goals for the Bulldogs, one in the first quarter and two in the second, allowing Bowie State to take a 9-8 lead with 10:11 remaining before halftime.
Nick Hahula's 45 yard field goal at the 6:44 mark in the second quarter returned the lead to the Hawks. The field goal broke an 11year old school record (originally set by Angel Bonilla, 44 yards, 2003).
The momentum was short lived as Bowie State capped an 11 play, 80 yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to take a 17-11 lead heading into halftime.
With 4:30 left in the third quarter, a six-yard touchdown pass and two point conversion for the Bulldogs left the Hawks trailing 25-11. Bennett connected with Jamal Chappell on a 27-yard pass and Diaz-Aviles made good on the point after at the start of the fourth quarter to extend Bowie State's lead 32-11.
With 11:22 left in the contest, Curtis Pumphrey's 89-yard interception return secured the Hawks' fate and the 39-11 victory for Bowie State.
Chowan returns to Garrison Stadium on October 18
th for their third home game in as many weeks. The CIAA Northern Division match-up against Virginia Union University is scheduled for 7:00pm.
