Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 75-59 decision to the visiting Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday evening in CIAA crossover play. The loss puts the Hawks at 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the CIAA while the Golden Bulls improve to 9-4 and 4-0 in the league.
Rachel Gostomski led the Hawks with 15 points in the loss and drained three three-pointers.
Naima Harrington added eight points while
Alisha Mobley and
Janelle Murphy added seven points apiece.
Kaela Nelson hauled in a team-high seven rebounds (five offensive, two defensive).
The Golden Bulls were paced by Karnina Bunch and Ashley Porter who scored 17 and 14 points respectively. Marquesha Sparks, Chelsea Faulhaber and LaTondra Morrow each collected eight points in the victory.
With the score tied 2-2 at the 17:37 mark, the Golden Bulls orchestrated a 9-0 run to pull away 11-2 with 15:38 left in the game. The Hawks battled to stay within striking distance and trailed by a mere two points (14-12) at the 10:40 mark after a layup by
Alisha Mobley. Both teams exchanged baskets as the clock ran down and a three pointer by
RyJae Anderson with 4:41 remaining gave the Hawks a 22-20 advantage and their first lead of the game.
With 2:42 on the clock and the score tied 25-25, the Golden Bulls capped a 7-1 run with a jumper by Karnina Bunch to give Johnson C. Smith a 32-26 advantage heading into halftime.
The Golden Bulls came out firing at the start of the second half and built their lead to 14 points (48-34) with 13:56 remaining in the contest. The Hawks fought back to pull within five points (53-48) at the 8:20 mark after a three pointer by Chowan's
Janelle Murphy. Johnson C. Smith promptly followed with an 11-0 run to pull away 64-48 with 4:54 on the clock. The Golden Bulls maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest and walked away with the 75-59 victory.
The Hawks return to the Helms Center on Saturday when they host Winston-Salem State in another CIAA crossover contest. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm.
