Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team slipped to 7-6 on the year and 1-2 in CIAA action on Monday evening after a narrow 73-72 setback to St. Augustine's University. The Lady Falcons improve to 7-4 on the season and improve to 2-0 in league play after picking up their fifth straight win.
Alisha Mobley was one of four Hawks to score double-digit points on Monday. She tallied a team-high 18 points while hauling in seven rebounds (three offensive, four defensive).
RyJae Anderson and
Rachel Gostomski each added 13 points while
Courtni Williams adding 12 points in the effort. Anderson drained four three-pointers with Gostomski adding two treys of her own.
Terri Jacob of St. Augustine's led all players in the contest with 20 points in the victory. Raneka Dunaway notched 12 points for the Lady Falcons.
The entire contest was closely contested and featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes over the course of the evening. The Lady Falcons' bench players proved to be the difference-maker as they tallied 42 points to guide their team to victory. The first half alone had nine lead changes with each team matching the other bucket for bucket. Mobley's jumper with 4:18 remaining before halftime put the Hawks ahead 26-22, their largest lead of the half. With the score knotted 33-33 and five seconds remaining, a made free throw by Mobley allowed the Hawks to take a narrow 34-33 lead heading into halftime.
Anderson extended Chowan's lead to five points after draining two three-pointers at the start of the second half. The Hawks and Lady Falcons exchanged baskets as the clock ran down. Anderson drained her third three-pointer of the contest with 5:29 left in the contest to give Chowan an eight point (64-56) advantage, their largest of the game. Down but not out, St. Augustine's battled to tie the game 70-70 with 49 seconds left on the clock. The Hawks and Lady Falcons exchanged free throws for the remainder of the contest but St. Augustine's escaped with the 73-72 victory.
Chowan returns to their home court on Thursday to take on Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off for the crossover game against the Lady Golden Bulls is slated for 5:30pm.
