Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up a critical 69-64 win over Shaw University in CIAA play on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks' victory over the Lady Bears was the first in women's basketball program history. Chowan improves to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in league play after Saturday's contest. The loss moves Shaw to 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in CIAA competition.
Rachel Gostomski had a career afternoon for the Blue and White, leading all players in the contest with 26 points and five three-pointers.
Alisha Mobley and
Kaela Nelson each added nine points with Mobley grabbing 10 rebounds (one offensive, nine defensive) in the contest.
Summer Curtis scored six points while notching three blocks, two steals and six rebounds (three offensive, three defensive).
Four Lady Bears scored double digit points in the loss, but it was not enough to top Chowan. Verdine Warner led the effort with 19 points while Micah Brooks and Kamiya Burwell each tallied 12 points. Kaula Jacks added 10 points in the game with Warner grabbing a team-high eight rebounds (five offensive, three defensive).
Gostomski's three pointer at the 17:19 mark capped a 10-0 run by the Hawks to give Chowan control early in the first half. Another trey by Gostomski with 11:34 left before halftime put the Hawks ahead 23-4 and gave Chowan their largest lead of the half. The Hawks held on to the momentum and maintained a double digit lead before heading into halftime with a 34-24 advantage.
Chowan remained in control and used a spread offensive attack to maintain a comfortable lead through the majority of the second half. With the Hawks leading 65-55, a three pointer by Burwell for the Lady Bears shifted the momentum back to Shaw to cut the deficit to seven points. Brooks followed with a trey of her own at the 1:36 mark to make the score 65-61. The Lady Bears pulled within three points (67-64) with 54 seconds left in the game, but Gostomski's two made free throws secured the 69-64 victory for the Hawks.
Chowan looks to grab their second league win of the season when they travel to St. Augustine's University on Monday. Tip-off with the Lady Falcons is slated for 5:30pm.
