Hawks Escape with Win over Bowie State

Box Score BOWIE, MD- The Chowan University women's basketball team earned a CIAA Northern Division victory over Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks improve to 9-9 overall and 3-5 in the league with the win while the Lady Bulldogs slip to 7-10 on the year and 2-7 against CIAA competition after the loss. 
 
Courtni Williams led all players in the game with 14 points.  Alisha Mobley and Rachel Gostomski added 11 and 10 points respectively while Kaela Nelson hauled in 13 rebounds (four offensive, nine defensive).  The Hawks combined to net 18-25 free throws and scored 12 points off of Bowie State turnovers.  The Chowan bench accounted for 26 points in the contest. 
 
Ashley Castle and Donia Naylor each scored 13 points for Bowie State while Denver Clyde drained 10 points.  Free throws proved to be critical for the Lady Bulldogs as well as the squad capitalized on 23-28 trips to the charity stripe. 
 
Bowie State grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the first half using free throws from Davis and a layup by Naylor.  The Lady Bulldogs remained in control for the entire first half and allowed the Hawks to take the lead just once within the first 20 minutes of play. 
 
The second half was a different story.  Trailing 28-24 with 19:30 on the clock, a three-pointer by Gostomski followed by a layup from Williams put the Hawks ahead 29-28 at the 16:23 mark.  Both teams exchanged baskets over the next minute of play.  With the score tied 29-29 and 15:30 left in the game, Mobley's free throw sparked a 13-3 run for the Hawks, resulting in a 42-32 advantage with just under ten minutes left to play.
 
The Lady Bulldogs managed to tie the score at the 5:50 mark (45-45) and once more at the 3:36 mark (49-49).  The Hawks used layups by Naima Harrington and Mobley while taking advantage of free throw opportunities to secure the 58-51 Northern Division victory. 
 
Chowan continues league and divisional play on Wednesday when they travel to Lincoln University to take on the Lady Lions. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
