Hawks Topple Lady Rams

Alisha Mobley had 20 points in Saturday's win against Winston-Salem State.
Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team earned a 64-58 victory in CIAA crossover play on Saturday afternoon against Winston-Salem State.  The Hawks earned their first win over the Lady Rams since joining the league in 2009. 
 
Alisha Mobley tallied 20 points for Chowan in the win while RyJae Anderson added 10 points.  Chantel Roberts contributed nine points for the Blue and White.  Mobley also hauled in a team-high seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive).  Summer Curtis notched three blocks and five rebounds (three offensive, two defensive) to aid the effort. 
 
For the Lady Rams, Jasmine Elum led all players in the game with 23 points followed by Dionna Scott who chipped in 10 points. 
 
The Hawks jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to start the game using a layup by Mobley and three pointer from RyJae Anderson at the 19:13 mark.  Chowan maintained the lead until layups from Amanda Hairston and Elum gave the Lady Rams a 17-15 advantage with 8:59 left to play.  Trailing 24-22 at the 4:52 mark after Hairston's jumper for Winston-Salem State, Naima Harrington's layup sparked a 7-0 run for Chowan and propelled the Hawks to a 31-26 advantage heading into halftime. 
 
Chowan stayed sharp at the start of the second half.  Rachel Gostomski's trey five minutes into the half handed the Hawks a 40-30 lead.  The Lady Rams fought back to get within striking distance but Chowan matched them basket for basket.  Williams' layup with 3:38 remaining in the game gave the Hawks a 58-45 lead, their largest of the game.  Winston-Salem cut the deficit to five points (63-58) with 29 seconds remaining in the contest but it proved to be too little too late as Chowan secured the 64-58 win. 
 
The Hawks improve to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in CIAA competition while the Lady Rams slip to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the league. Chowan returns to the Helms Center on Monday to take on Livingstone College in another CIAA crossover contest.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
