Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University Baseball team dropped a doubleheader against St. Augustine's University in low scoring affairs 2-1 and 1-0 (eight innings) on Saturday afternoon. Chowan falls to 7-14 on the season and 3-2 in league play after the loss while St. Augustine's improves to 13-8 and 5-0 in league play.
Both starters threw gems on the mound in game one.
Ryan Moore picked up the loss in the first game, throwing a complete game while allowing two runs (one earned) off eight hits. Moore collected eight strikeouts in the loss. St. Augustine's John Hailey picked up the win throwing a complete game shutting down the Hawks, allowing one run off five hits.
The night cap featured much of the same on the hill with both starters throwing no decisions.
George Mazza pitched six strong innings giving up four hits and striking out seven. St. Augustine's starter Clarence Ganus threw seven innings allowing one hit and five walks.
CU's
Carter Siweck picked up the loss in relief dropping him to 1-2 on the season. Siweck pitched two innings giving up three hits and the game winning run in the top of the eighth inning. St. Augustine's Stephen Hamilton picked up the save throwing a scoreless outing allowing one Hawk to reach on a walk.
Scoring opportunities did not come often for either team. St. Augustine's scored in the fifth inning of game one and eighth inning of the night cap. Chowan scored in the sixth inning and failed to score in the night cap.
St. Augustine's scored first in game one in the top of the fifth inning. James Sterling started the Falcon rally with a single down the right field line. Jason Baytop reached on an infield single. Jamie Scott pushed runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Ariel Polanco would break the scoreless tie with a single to left field scoring Sterling. An error on the play would plate Baytop and allow Polanco to take second giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Chowan scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Justin Shockley reached on an error by the second baseman.
Drew Mason doubled to center field pushing the runner to third.
Tyler Burden's sacrifice fly put the Hawks on the board where the score would stand at 2-1.
St. Augustine's kept the Hawks off the scoreboard in the night cap. Both teams failed to score in the first seven innings.
Carter Siweck took over on the mound for Mazza in the top of the seventh inning with runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt would push the runners into scoring position with only one out. Jason Baytop would reach on a fielder's choice with
Colby Wiggins tagging out a stranded runner at second. Siweck would get Jamie Scott to fly out getting out of the jam.
Polanco would start the Falcon rally in the eighth inning with a double down the left field line. Daveed Todd's single put the go-ahead run on third base. Clarence Peace singled with two outs plating Polanco and the crucial go-ahead run.
Drew Mason picked up three hits in the contest. Mason's single in the second inning was the Hawks lone hit in the nightcap.
Evan Holton had two hits in game one and
Brandon Mack picked up a hit in the contest.
St. Augustine's Jason Baytop went 4-4 at the plate in game one. Ariel Polanco finished 3-7 at the plate with two RBIs.
Chowan finishes the series Sunday in a nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
