Persistence Pays off as Hawks Clip Davis & Elkins

Kyree Bethel scored 24 points for the Hawks on Saturday and drained five three pointers.
Box Score ELKINS, WV- The Chowan University men's basketball team grabbed a 79-77 win over Davis & Elkins on Saturday afternoon. Kyree Bethel had a stand-out performance for the Blue and White as he notched 24 points in the victory and accounted for five of the team's seven three pointers.  Phoenix Buter-Poole added 18 points in the win while Ashante Ross and Warren Powers chipped in 14 and 11 points respectively.  Butler-Poole also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds (two offensive, six defensive).
 
Devin Miller led the Senators with 24 points in the loss.  Alex Visiljevic and Wesley Sprinkle also scored double-digit points for Davis & Elkis with Visiljevic scoring 15 points followed by Sprinke's ten points. 
 
The Hawks trailed the Senators 5-2 to start out the contest.  Chowan trailed by as many as seven points (16-9) at the 13:16 mark, but battled to pull within striking distance.  A three pointer by Kyree Bethel with 10:03 left in the first half put the Hawks ahead 20-18 and gave Chowan their first lead of the game.  Kortez Smith's lay-up with 7:13 on the clock gave the Hawks a 28-18 lead.  Davis & Elkins refused to give up the momentum and closed out the half with a 13-3 run to knot the score 31-31 heading into halftime. 
 
Both teams exchanged baskets at the start of the second half.  With the score tied 35-35 and 18:20 on the clock, the Senators orchestrated a 6-0 run to pull away 41-36 at the 15:46 mark.  The Hawks continued to claw their way back to even the score.  Butler-Poole's three pointer with 14:42 left to play knotted the score 42-42.  The score was tied once more (44-44) before Davis & Elkins took a 49-45 lead with 11:35 remaining in the contest.  The Senators led by as many as nine points midway through the second half (56-47).  With the Hawks trailing 65-57 with 6:17 left in the game, a three pointer by Bethel sparked a 9-0 run, giving Chowan a 66-65 advantage at the 5:09 mark. 
 
The Hawks maintained a one point lead through the 4:15 mark.  A jumper by Miller put the Senators ahead 70-69 with 2:10 left in the game.  A jumper by Arroyo put Chowan back in the lead with 1:40 on the clock.  Bethel and Butler-Poole took advantage of free through opportunities to give Chowan a comfortable 77-72 advantage with just seven seconds left to play.   Chowan and Davis & Elkins exchanged free throws with the Hawks hanging on to a 79-74 lead.  A three pointer by Sprinkle for the Senators made the score 79-77, but the Hawks escaped with the victory. 
 
Chowan improves to 3-3 with the victory while the Senators move to 6-3 on the season.  The Hawks travel to Buies Creek, NC on December 10th to take on Campbell University in exhibition play at 7:00pm before returning to the Helms Center on December 17th to host Mount Olive College at 7:30pm.
