Box Score PEMBROKE, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 78-64 decision to the Braves of UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday evening. The Hawks fall to 6-3 on the season after the loss while the Braves improve to 3-2. The loss snapped a three game win streak for Chowan.
Rachel Gostomski scored a team-high 14 points in the loss and drained four three pointers.
Alisha Mobley and
Courtni Williams each tallied 11 points. Mobley notched a double-double effort by hauling in 11 rebounds (three offensive, eight defensive).
Summer Curtis had three blocks in the contest.
Kamile Horne led the effort for UNC-Pembroke with 22 points. Katelyn Mitchell added 14 points for the Braves while Kierra Haney added 13 of her own to go along with 14 rebounds (five offensive, nine defensive.
Chowan allowed UNC-Pembroke to score 36 points off turnovers. A three pointer by Kierra Haney five minutes into the contest capped a 7-2 run for the Braves. The Hawks battled back to knot the score 7-7 using a three pointer by Williams at the 14:00 mark and used another three pointer by Murphy to gain their first lead of the game with 11:52 remaining before halftime. Chowan maintained the lead until Wayne Mack's jumper at the 1:52 mark gave UNC-Pembroke a 28-27 advantage. A three pointer by Mitchell with 1:11 on the clock secured a 31-27 advantage for the Braves heading into halftime.
The Hawks failed to regain the momentum in the second half and trailed for the duration of the contest. Mobley's tip-in at the 14:56 mark brought Chowan within two (37-35), but a 6-0 run by UNC-Pembroke gave the Braves firm 43-25 advantage. The Hawks battled to stay within reach as the clock wound down. With 11:03 left in the game, Curtis' jumper tied the score 47-47. Mitchell responded with a jumper of her own at the 10:41 mark to give the lead to UNC-Pembroke.
Chowan trailed by as many as nine points at the 6:53 (61-52) before falling to UNC-Pembroke 78-64. The Hawks will return to Murfreesboro to host Belmont Abbey on December 17
th and Barber-Scotia on December 20
th. Tip-off times are slated for 5:30pm and 2:00pm respectively.
