Box Score INSTITUTE, WV- The Chowan University women's basketball team took a 71-61 loss at the hands of the University of Charleston on the second day of the CIAA/Mountain East Challenge on Saturday. The Hawks move to 1-1 with the loss while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Alisha Mobley racked up a team-high 14 points in the loss, followed by
Rachel Gostomski with nine points.
Summer Curtis hauled in seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive) and notched three blocks for the Blue and White.
University of Charleston's Chyress Lockhart led all scorers in the contest with 16 points on the evening. Nichole Perry and DeJanique Reddix scored 14 and 10 points respectively. Tianna Kelly collected 12 rebounds (three offensive, nine defensive) for the Golden Eagles in the win.
The Hawks trailed 5-0 at the start of the first half before Gostomski's three pointer put Chowan on the board. The Golden Eagles took off on a 7-0 run to pull ahead 12-3 five minutes into the contest.
Chowan battled back to pull within four points after Curtis' free throws made the score 19-15 midway through the half, but the University of Charleston headed into halftime with a 34-23 lead.
The second half appeared to be a different story at first. With 18:57 remaining in the contest, Mobley took advantage of two free throw opportunities to make the score 34-25. The Hawks trailed by five points (39-34) at the 16:18 mark, but layups from Curtis and Gostomski brought Chowan within striking distance five minutes into the half. Gostomski's made free throw knotted the score, and Curtis' layup at the 14:40 mark gave the Hawks their first lead of the contest.
The Hawks and Golden Eagles battled for the lead as the clock wound down. Mobley continued to lead the Hawks as her layup at the 10:58 mark gave Chowan a 50-46 edge. The University of Charleston maintained a narrow 60-59 lead with 5:57 remaining in the game after Curtis' layup and free throw kept the Hawks in the mix. With 3:16 left in the game, a basket by Kelly put the University of Charleston ahead by three points, and a Hawk turnover led to a 7-0 run allowing the Golden Eagles to close out the game the 71-61 win.
Chowan will take on Barton College on November 12
th in their next outing. Tip-off for the Hawks' home opener is slated for 5:30pm in the Helms Center.
