Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-0 at home on Tuesday evening in an 87-81 victory over Bluefield State. The Hawks had double digit performances from four players en route to the win.
Rachel Gostomski paced the Hawks with 22 points and nailed five three pointers in the contest.
Janelle Murphy followed with 17 points with
Alisha Mobley and
Courtni Williams notching 15 and 13 points respectively.
Kearah Jefferys led all players in the contest with 32 points in the loss for Bluefield State. Andrea Hauser chipped in 13 points while Jenaya Abernathy added 10 points. Tonya Jackson hauled in 11 rebounds.
The Hawks started out the contest with a 12-0 run and never looked back, maintaining the lead for the entire contest. A three pointer by Murphy at the 15:38 mark put Chowan ahead 15-2 heading into the first media timeout. The Lady Blues trailed by double digits until Abernathy hit a jumper with 1:47 to make the score 40-31. Murphy's trey with 1:02 left in the half propelled the Hawks to a 47-36 lead heading into halftime.
The Hawks continued to set the pace in the second half and led by as many as 12 points with just under five minutes remaining. An 8-0 run sparked by a layup by Abernathy at the 4:35 mark brought the Lady Blues within four points (79-75). Mobley drained two free throws followed by a jumper by Williams' allowing the Hawks to return to a comfortable lead and close out the game with an 87-81 victory.
Bluefield State slips to 0-5 on the season after Tuesday's loss. Chowan will be back in action on December 7
th when they take on Barber-Scotia in a 6:00pm contest in Concord, NC.
