Box Score WILSON, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up a 64-61 win over the Barton College Lady Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
Alisha Mobley and
Summer Curtis both recorded double-double efforts in the win. Mobley notched 17 points and 11 rebounds (six offensive, five defensive) while Curtis added 12 points and hauled in 13 rebounds (four offensive, nine defensive).
Janelle Murphy chipped in 11 points in the victory.
For Barton, Nyesha Willie led all players in the game with 27 points in the loss. Cassandra Brown notched 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Hawks held on to a narrow 3-2 lead at the start of the first half after a free throw from Mobley. A lay-up by Murphy extended Chowan's lead to 5-2 with 18:48 on the clock. A jump-up by
RyJae Anderson at the 13:00 mark pulled the Hawks' lead to 13-4. Down but not out, the Lady Bulldogs battled to pull within two points at the 10:07 mark after a lay-up from Cassandra Brown. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the half but a jumper from Murphy gave the Hawks a 29-27 advantage heading into halftime.
Chowan came out firing in the second half and extended their lead to eight points (35-27) with 17:53 left to play after a layup by Mobley. The Hawks continued to take it to the Lady Bulldogs, and led by as many as 13 points (58-45) with just 4:44 left in the contest. From there, Barton fought back with a vengeance. The Lady Bulldogs used a 9-0 run capped by a three pointer by Brianna Thomas to make the score 58-54 with 2:12 remaining. A three pointer by Willie with 49 seconds left in the game left the Hawks with a mere one point lead (62-61). A Barton foul led to
Courtni Williams making good on two free throw opportunities to secure the 64-61 win.
The Hawks improve to 4-2 with the victory while Barton slips to 2-4 on the young season. Chowan returns to Murfreesboro and the Helms Center on November 26
th when they host Bluefield State. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
