Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team suffered a 75-72 setback to the visiting Senators of Davis & Elkins on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks move to 0-2 on the season while the Senators improve to 4-1.
Phoenix Butler-Poole led the effort for the Hawks, notching a double-double in the loss. Butler-Poole tallied 26 points in the contest while hauling in 14 rebounds (10 offensive, four defensive).
Tiron Brown and
Ashante Ross collected 14 and 13 points apiece respectively. Davis & Elkins had six players score double digits in the win. Bruce Komakech, Devin Miller and Wesley Sprinkle each tallied 14 points while Aleksander Visiljevic added 13 points with Juwan Strothers adding 12 points in the contest.
Sprinkle hit a three pointer at the 18:04 mark to give Davis & Elkins a 9-2 lead in the first half. The Hawks battled to overcome the deficit but trailed by as many as nine points(29-20) with 8:04 left to play in the second half. Chowan chipped away to put together an 8-0 run to make the score 29-28 at the 5:41 mark. A lay-up by Komakech followed by a jumper from Anthony Daniels, Juwan Strothers and two made free throws from Komakech contributed to a 37-28 lead by Davis & Elkins at the 3:19 mark. The Senators closed out the half with a 41-36 advantage.
The Hawks outscored the Senators 36-34 in the second half but were unable to earn the win. Chowan and Davis & Elkins traded baskets after halftime with neither team managing a lead greater than four after the midway point of the half. The Senators held on to take home the 75-72 victory and increase their wins streak to four straight. The Hawks will hit the hard court again on November 29
th and 30
th to compete in the Bluefield State Classic. Chowan takes on Concord on Friday at 5:00pm and Bluefield State on Saturday at 6:00pm.
