Hawks Claw Past Barton

Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team protected their home court on Tuesday evening in a 67-59 over Barton College.  The Hawks were tied with the Lady Bulldogs through the first half, but battled their way to victory down the stretch of the second half to earn the win. 
 
Alisha Mobley and Rachek Gostomski each scored a team-high 13 points for the Hawks.  Courtni Williams hauled in seven rebounds in the win (two offensive, five defensive) while Summer Curtis notched three blocks.  Nyesha Willie led all players in the contest with 19 points in loss for Barton. 
 
The Hawks battled with the Lady Bulldogs to earn the lead through the majority of the first half.  Barton led by as many as six points with 4:15 left before halftime, but a jumper by Courtni Williams followed by a three pointer by Gostomski put the Hawks back in the mix.  A layup by Janelle Murphy with 1:26 left in the half knotted the contest 27-27. 
 
Chowan went to work in the second half.  Although the Lady Bulldogs hung around until the 11:30 mark, a jumper by Chantel Roberts gave Chowan the lead and contributed to a 5-0 run for the Hawks. 
 
A jumper by Brianna Thomas for the Bulldogs at the 9:15 mark put the Lady Bulldogs within one point (50-49), but Mobley followed up with a basket of her own to give Chowan the lead once more.  The Hawks maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest and led by as many as 10 points in the half before closing out the contest with the 67-59 victory. 
 
Chowan improves to 2-1 on the season while the Lady Bulldogs slip to 1-2.  The Hawks will take on Tusculum on Saturday in the Helms Center.  Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm.
