Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Chowan University football team forced the Broncos of Fayetteville State into three overtime periods but came up short in a 35-29 CIAA cross divisional match-up on Saturday evening.
Cameron Stover completed 9-16 pass attempts for 106 yards before
Dain McFarland entered the contest. McFarland was 9-22 in pass completions and tossed three touchdown passes in the loss.
Robert Holland had five receptions for 123 yards and caught two touchdown passes while
Ryan Nolan added four catches for 46 yards and one touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Jason Ampy led all players in the game with 12 tackles (eight solo, four assisted) and three tackles for loss.
Anthony Prince followed with nine tackles (six solo, three assisted).
For Fayetteville State, Derek Bryant completed 22 of 30 passes for 324 passing yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Jemeryn Jenkins chipped in eight passes for 117 yards and one touchdown pass. Juwan Moye caught seven passes, hauling in two touchdowns while accounting for 165 yards. Jenkins led the Bronco offense with eight carries totaling 71 yards
The Broncos capped a four play, 75 yard drive with a 24 yard touchdown run by Andre Montgomery to take a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Antonio Mayo's point after attempt was good, resulting in a 7-0 for Fayetteville State. The Hawks were unable to respond in the following drive. The Broncos capitalized on a nine play, 91 yard drive when Jenkins connected with Moye on an 11 yard touchdown pass. A successful two point conversion resulted in a 15-0 advantage for Fayetteville State with less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Willie Hickman shifted the momentum for Chowan when he picked off Jenkins' pass and returned it 41 yards for a Hawk touchdown.
Alex Noboa's point after attempt was good, making the score 15-7 with 1:19 left in the quarter.
After halftime, McFarland connected with Nolan on a short two yard touchdown pass.
Antjuan Randall rushed for the two yard conversion to knot the game 15-15 with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter.
The Hawks and Broncos exchanged downs for the remainder of the third quarter and well into the fourth. Bryant's 20 yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Lorrick followed by Matthew Trau's point after gave Fayetteville State a 22-15 lead with a mere 38 seconds left on the clock. With Chowan's drive starting on their own 40, McFarland threw a 21 yard pass to Holland, followed by a 24 yard pass to Nolan to take the ball to Fayetteville State's 15 yard line. Pass interference by the Broncos moved the ball to the two yard line. With two seconds on the clock, McFarland's two yard pass to Holland made the score 22-21. Noboa's point after attempt tied the game 22 all with no time left on the clock to send the contest into overtime.
Both teams failed to score in the first overtime as an interception and blocked field goal sent the contest into a second overtime. Fayetteville State's touchdown and point after attempt made the score 29-22. The Hawks had one opportunity to score, and capitalized on it as McFarland connected with Holland on a six yard touchdown pass. Noboa's point after attempt was good, knotting the game once more and sending the contest into a third overtime.
McFarland's pass was intercepted by Simeon Marshall on the second play of the Hawks' drive. With the ball on Chowan's 25 yard line, Bryant tossed a 13 yard pass to Kasunn Williams and followed with a 10 yard touchdown pass to Moye to confirm the 35-29 victory.
Fayetteville improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in CIAA action. The Hawks fall to 2-3 and 1-1 in league play. Chowan will travel to Bowie State next Saturday to take on the Bulldogs in CIAA Northern Division action. Kick-off is slated for 1:00pm.
