Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University football team suffered their first Homecoming loss in head coach
Tim Place's tenure on Saturday afternoon in a 37-31 overtime loss to the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University. The loss drops the Hawks to 3-5 on the year and 2-3 in CIAA play. The Vikings improve to 3-5 overall and move to 3-2 against league competition with the victory.
Robert Holland led all players in the game with 10 catches for 122 yards.
Anthony Clanton and
Damian Ellis each had a touchdown in the win.
DaSean Martin had seven carries for 43 yards on the afternoon and ran for two touchdowns.
Ryan Simpson connected with eight different receivers for 318 passing yards in the loss.
Defensively,
Jared Turner and
Aeon Blake led all players in the game with nine tackles. Blake had two tackles for loss and one sack in addition to five solo tackles and four assisted.
For the Vikings, Tyrell Houghton threw for four touchdowns and 380 yards in the victory. He connected with Antonio Huff 11 times to account for 88 of the total passing yards. Petey Boone had 29 carries for 137 yards in the contest.
A fumble on Chowan's first drive of the game resulted in the Vikings recovering the ball early in the first quarter. Elizabeth City State capped a five play, 49 yard drive with Houghton's 28 yard touchdowns pass to Antonio Huff. The point after attempt by Brett Symonds was good, resulting in a 7-0 lead for the Vikings with 10:49 left in the first quarter.
Nick Hahula's 34 yard field goal at the start of the second quarter put the Hawks on the board. With 1:14 remaining before halftime, the Vikings used a 23 yard field goal to extend their lead to 10-3.
The Hawks capitalized on their first scoring opportunity after halftime. Martin's 22 yard rush topped a five play, 54 yard drive to knot the score 10-10 with 13:16 left to play in the third quarter. The Vikings answered with a score on their next drive thanks to Houghton's 65 yard pass to Boone. Symonds' point after attempt gave Elizabeth City a 17-10 lead. Chowan quickly answered back with a five play, 77 yard drive which ended in an 11 yard touchdown run by Martin. Hahula's point after attempt was good, which tied the score 17-17 with 5:50 left in the third quarter.
Elizabeth City State pieced together a 13 play, 96 yard drive capped by a one yard touchdown run by Kenny King. Symonds made good on the point after attempt to put the Vikings ahead 24-17. The Hawks refused to give in and answered back in the ensuing drive. They knotted the score once more when Simpson connected with Ellis on a seven yard pass and Hahula's point after attempt was good.
The Vikings were unable to score on their next drive, and the Hawks added to the momentum when Simpson threw a 23 yard touchdown pass to Clanton with 4:09 remaining in the game. Hahula's point after attempt gave Chowan a 31-24 advantage over Elizabeth City State. On their next drive, the Vikings answered with a six play 66 yard touchdown drive and point after attempt to tie the game 31-31 with 1:55 left on the clock.
Neither team scored during the remaining time in regulation. The Vikings had the ball first in overtime. With the ball on Chowan's 25-yardline, Houghton found Javoris Bryant on a 14 yard touchdown pass to pull ahead 37-31. Symonds' point after attempt missed wide right.
The Hawks were unable to score on the next drive. Simpson's pass to
Antjuan Randall was snatched in the end zone by Lavonte Baker, ending Chowan's scoring opportunity.
Chowan looks to recover next weekend when they host Virginia State University on November 2
nd. The CIAA Northern Division match-up is slated for 1:00pm. Saturday's contest is also Chowan's annual Hall of Fame game.
