Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's soccer team was held scoreless on Wednesday afternoon in an 8-0 loss to Belmont Abbey College. The Hawks fall to 1-13 on the season while the Crusaders improve to 9-3-1 with the win.
Belmont Abbey out-shot Chowan 53-1 on the afternoon.
Jennifer Harvell made 21 saves for the Hawks with 75 minutes in goal, while
Monica Hayward added two saves in the effort.
The Crusaders scored their first goal of the contest in the 23
rd minute of play when Sarah Silapaxay took advantage of an open net and headed the ball into the far post off Mady Sully's cross.
With an early 1-0 lead, Silvia Vazuqez's foul kick found Robyn Hatcher in the 38
th minute of play. Hatcher used a huddle around the goal to inch the ball past the Hawks' keeper to give Belmont Abbey a 3-0 lead.
Hatcher notched her second goal of the contest in the 42
nd minute of play when she drilled the ball into the upper post from 25 yards out.
Two minutes into the second half, Simone Melvin used Meghan Philips' cross and sent it into the near post from the top of the box for a 4-0 lead for Belmont Abbey. In the 55
th minute, Melissa Pereira used a rebound from Amanda Steiner's cross to give the Crusaders a comfortable 5-0 advantage.
Ananda Bebreyesus added an unassisted score in the 66
th minute before Cassiidy Coutinho score two more goals for Belmont Abbey to secure the 8-0 victory.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Bob Jones University. Game time is slated for 1:00pm.
