Chowan Falls Short in Battle of Hawks

Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University football team fell to 1-2 on Saturday after a 28-17 loss to the Shorter University Hawks.  

Cameron Stover and Ryan Nolan teamed up to provide 260 passing yards, contributing to 334 total yards of offense in the loss.  Between the two, they threw to seven different receivers.  Before coming in during the second half to take on the quarterback duties, Nolan himself contributed 92 yards of offensive receiving yards.  Shorter  finished the game with 299 yards of total offense and executed the running game well with 180 of them coming from rushing yards.  

TJ Batchelor had a monster game today for Chowan.  He collected 17 total tackles (10 solo, 7 assisted), forced two fumbles, and had four sacks.  Jason Ampy had a solid day on defense as well, collecting nine tackles in the loss. 

Shorter failed to score during their first drive of the game.  Chowan quickly put themselves on the board after Cameron Stover completed a series of long passes.  He first threw to Ryon Martin for 36 yards to earn a first down, followed by a 15 yard rush by Tim Hanson.  Stover then threw a 50 yard pass to JR Williams to make the score 6-0.  Alex Noboa's point after attempt was good, giving the Hawks a 7-0 lead with 7:28 to play in the first quarter.  

Shorter quickly answered back to score a touchdown thanks to a 49 yard pass from Shorter's Eric Dodson to Kirk Wilson, followed by the successful point after attempt.  The score remained tied 7-7 until Cameron Stover launched a 62 yard pass to Ryan Nolan with 20 seconds left to play in the first quarter.  Alex Noboa's point after attempt was good, resulting in Chowan taking a 14-7 lead.  

The second quarter slowed down offensively for both teams until Alex Noboa drove a field goal between the uprights to make the score 17-7.   TJ Batchelor and Jason Ampyled the Chowan defense to prevent Shorter from scoring during the quarter, while Stover completed 11-15 passes for 205 passing yards.   

The second half the game saw the momentum swing in favor of the Shorter University Hawks.  Ryan Nolan stepped in to play quarterback for Stover, and finished the game 6-20 in completed passes and 55 passing yards.  

With 9:44 remaining in the third quarter,  Shorter's TJ Telfair had a 70 yard rush, along with a point after attempt from Troy Postell to make the score 17-14. Shorter's QB Eric Dodson would find Brandon Martin to complete a 63 yard pass for Shorter to make the score 21-17.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Ryan Nolan's pass was intercepted by Kendall Lacey at the Chowan zero yardline.  Lacey scored on the play taking the game to 27-17 in favor of the Shorter Hawls.  Troy Postell's point after attempt was good, resulting in a 28-17 score.  

The Chowan Hawks were unable to muster the comeback in the 4th quarter.  

They are off until next Saturday at 1:00pm when they head to Raleigh to take on the Shaw University Bears.  After today's loss, the Chowan Hawks fall to 1-2 while Shorter improves to 2-1 on the short season.
