BOWIE, MD – Despite 22 points from Talaya Lynch, the Chowan University women's basketball team fell to Bowie State University 63-51 on Tuesday.  Lynch made two of Chowan's three three-pointers and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, but it was not enough.

Chowan falls to 8-14 overall (3-9 CIAA, 1-5 North), and the Lady Bulldogs improve to 5-14 (5-7 CIAA, 4-2 North).

Chowan made 21 field goals to just 18 for Bowie State, but the Lady Bulldogs held a huge advantage at the free throw line.  For the game, BSU shot 23-30 at the charity stripe.  Chowan shot just 6-14.  Free throws proved to be the pivotal aspect of the game, as nearly every other statistical category was even between the two teams.

BSU held a slight rebounding advantage (36-32), but Chowan had more steals and forced more turnovers for the game.

Ransheda Jennings added 12 points and a game-high five assists for Chowan, and Naima Harrington grabbed five rebounds.  Juliette Turner led the Lady Bulldogs with a double-double; 17 points and 15 rebounds.  Brooke Miles led BSU with 18 points, including a trio of three-pointers.

The game was defined by scoring runs, and the Hawks had the first one, going up 7-2 early in the game.  Bowie State came right back, though, with a 15-3 run to take a 17-10 lead with just under ten minutes to play in the first half.  An 8-1 Chowan run tied the game at 18, but BSU regained an 11 point lead with three minutes on the clock.

After holding a 34-23 halftime lead, the Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on a 9-2 spurt to go up 43-25.  Chowan did not quit, holding BSU to just three points over the next 9:32, and climbing back within seven points.  A Jennings layup with 1:20 remaining in the game brought the Hawks within six points, but Bowie State went 10-11 at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the victory.

After starting the season 1-13, Bowie State has won four of their last six games.  Chowan has won two of their past 10 games.

Chowan will travel to Lincoln University (PA) on Thursday, February 9th, for a 5:30pm tip-off.
