MURFREESBORO – Three players scored in double figures as the Chowan University women's basketball team defeated Virginia Union University 59-54 on Monday.  Ransheda Jennings led all scorers with 18, while Janelle Murphy collected 15 and Talaya Lynch tallied 12 for the Hawks (10-15, 5-10 CIAA, 3-6 North).

Jennings and Lynch both went 5-6 at the free throw line for the game, while Murphy shot 6-8.  As a team, the Hawks shot 18-28 from the charity stripe for the game.  Virginia Union (9-13, 6-7 CIAA, 4-3 North) shot well from the line, going 15 of 20.  They made 12 of 13 attempts in the second half.

Freshman Summer Curtis had another standout game defensively, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and blocking four shots.  Lynch had five steals, while Jennings dished out three assists.

Vicki Collier led the Lady Panthers with 15 points on 6-9 shooting.  Ashle Freeman tallied 10 points, and Melyse Brown pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for VUU.

The contest was close early on, as neither team led by more than four points until Lynch drained a jumper at the 12:13 mark to put Chowan up 16-11.  The Lady Panthers remained within striking distance, though, and pulled with one following a Collier layup with 5:30 remaining in the half.

That would be the final points for Virginia Union, however, in the half.  They missed their final 10 field goal attempts, allowing Chowan to end the half on a 9-0 run to go into halftime with a 33-23 lead.

Chowan extended that lead to 12 less than three minutes into second half, but then hit a scoring drought of their own.  Over the next 5:22, the Hawks managed just three points.  VUU connected on all six free throw attempts over that span, pulling within five with 12 minutes to play.

A Freeman three pointer with 5:42 remaining tied the game at 46, and capped a 17-6 Virginia Union run.  Chowan did not waiver, though, and quickly went up by six again.  The Lady Panthers would only get within three points as time wound down, as Chowan held on for the win.

Each team scored 26 points in the paint, and Chowan grabbed one more rebound than VUU.  Neither team shot well from beyond the arc, with Chowan shooting just 3-17, and VUU going 1-9.

Chowan will return to action next Thursday, February 23rd, when they host Virginia State University in the final regular season game of the season.
