CHARLOTTE, NC – A 24-2 second half run by Johnson C. Smith University sealed a convincing 78-44 win over Chowan University in women's basketball action Wednesday night. The Lady Golden Bulls shot 52.5% from the floor, including going 20-28 in the second half, en route to the win.
Talaya Lynch scored 16 points to lead Chowan (5-6, 0-1 CIAA). She also had a team-high three assists and grabbed five rebounds. Freshman
Summer Curtis also pulled down five rebounds and recorded two blocked shots. She finished with six points.
Johnson C. Smith raced out to a quick 6-0 lead, but Chowan bounced right back and closed the gap to 11-9 when
T'Arra Cutting scored her only three points of the game with a trey. Lynch then drained a three pointer with 10:24 on the clock to cut the JCSU lead to 15-12.
JCSU (8-3, 2-0 CIAA), who was in the “Receiving Votes” category of this week's Division II National Poll, responded with a 13-2 run over the next 6:35 to pull ahead 28-14. A
Ransheda Jennings layup halted the JCSU spurt and began a solid final three minutes for the Hawks. Chowan made four of their final six shots, leading to a short 8-3 run to end the half and put them down just 31-22 at halftime. Jennings finished with 10 points.
JCSU opened the second half on a 10-3 run to take a 16 point lead with 15:32 remaining in the game. A Lynch layup maintained that 16 point deficit at the 10:23 mark. From that point on, though, it was all Johnson C. Smith.
Over the next 7:28, JCSU went on a 24-2 run to go up by 38. The Lady Golden Bulls shot 10-14 during that span and forced seven Chowan turnovers. The Hawks went 0-7 from the floor during the drought. Two free throws by Jennings were the only points Chowan could manage.
Brittany Dorsett led JCSU with 17 points. She shot 5-5 from the three-point line. Racquel Davis and LaQwesha Gamble each posted 13 points.
Chowan will return to action on Saturday, January 7
th, when they travel to CIAA South foe Fayetteville State University. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
