MURFREESBORO – The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs used a quick second half spurt to defeat Chowan University on Saturday, 70-65. The Lady Bulldogs picked up their second win of the season and now sit at 2-12 overall (2-5 CIAA, 1-0 North). Chowan falls to 7-10 overall (2-5 CIAA, 0-1 North).
Chowan took a 10-6 lead with a
Ransheda Jennings layup with 13:31 to play in the first half. That would be their biggest lead of the game, however. A 13-6 Bowie State run gave them the lead, 19-16 with 9:07 on the clock. Chowan fought right back, though, and took the lead back with 5:51 to play following a
Danielle Coleman layup.
The Hawks maintained a slim lead throughout the remainder of the half, but Cortney Baynard nailed a jumper with just four seconds on the clock to give Lady Bulldogs a 33-32 lead going into halftime.
Bowie State went on a 12-2 run to open the second half to open up a 45-34 lead. Chowan did respond, though, eventually taking the lead, 53-51, with 7:34 remaining in the game. Bowie State remained close the entire second half and regained the lead following a Chanita Jordan layup with 1:28 on the clock.
Bowie State made eight of their final nine free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the road victory.
Talaya Lynch had another strong game offensively for Chowan, draining six three-pointers and scoring a game-high 24 points. She also grabbed six rebounds. Jennings chipped in with 14 points and four assists.
Summer Curtis had a team-high seven rebounds.
Juliette Turner led Bowie State with 19 points. Jasmine Jacobs scored 15, and Chanita Jordan notched a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Bowie State out-scored Chowan 22-3 on second chance points, thanks to 14 offensive rebounds. Chowan out-shot BSU from the floor, 42.9% to 37.1%.
Chowan will return to CIAA North action on Monday, January 23
rd, when they host Lincoln University (PA) at 5:30pm.
