SALISBURY, NC – Clutch free throw shooting by the Chowan Hawks sealed a thrilling 70-68 victory over Livingstone College on Thursday. Over the final 1:41, the Hawks made six of their seven attempts at the line. Chowan improves to 7-9 overall (2-4 CIAA) with the win, and snaps a three-game losing skid. Livingstone falls to 6-11 overall (2-4 CIAA).
Reigning CIAA Player of the Week
Talaya Lynch led all scorers with 23 points on 6-10 shooting. The CIAA leader in free throw percentage connected on 8 of 11 at the line.
Ransheda Jennings added 20 points, including 18 in the second half.
Lynch opened the game on fire, scoring the first seven points of the contest to give Chowan a 7-0 lead just one minute, 46 seconds in. Chowan then hit just one of their next nine field goal attempts, allowing the Lady Blue Bears back into the game. An 8-0 LC run gave them the lead with 14:59 remaining.
Janelle Murphy drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 14 with just over ten minutes to play, but the Hawks managed just five points over the next 7:38, and Livingstone held a 25-19 advantage late in the half. Murphy finished with nine points and played 38 minutes.
Chowan's offense then came alive, as the Hawks connected on their final three shots of the half, to end on an 8-2 spurt and send the score into halftime deadlocked at 27.
After Livingstone opened the second half on a 9-0 run, Chowan hit eight of their next nine shot attempts, spurring a 21-8 run, and putting the Hawks up 48-44 with 12 minutes to play.
Chowan widened that lead to five points, but the Lady Blue Bears responded with an 11-0 run to take a six point lead with 6:16 remaining on the clock. LC's lead stayed at six with 3:38 on the clock when the Hawks' started to go to the free throw line. A free throw and later layup by Jennings tied the game at 64 with 2:14 to play.
Chowan would not relinquish the lead. Jennings went 3-4 at the line down the stretch, while Murphy made both of her attempts and Lynch added another. Livingstone battled tough until the end, though, scoring four points in the final 15 seconds.
Chowan played only seven players in the game, and all five starters played at least 29 minutes. They got plenty of support, however, from the two off the bench. CIAA Rookie of the Week
Summer Curtis blocked four shots and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in just 12 minutes of play, and
Naima Harrington tallied 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Livingstone out-rebounded Chowan 53-38, and shot 36.0% from the floor. Chowan nailed 45.5% of their shots, including going 14-23 (60.9%) in the second half. LC made just one of ten three-point attempts.
Chowan will begin CIAA North play on Saturday, January 21
st, when they host Bowie State University at 2:00pm.
