MURFREESBORO – Three Shaw University players recorded double-doubles as the Lady Bears defeated Chowan 75-67 in CIAA play on Saturday. Chowan falls to 6-8 (1-3 CIAA) with the loss. Shaw (8-5, 4-0 CIAA) has won four games in a row.
Aslea Williams (15 points, 10 rebounds), Kyria Burford (12 points, 14 rebounds), and Crystal Harris (16 points, 14 rebounds) each had double-doubles for Shaw.
Talaya Lynch also notched a double-double, firing in 27 points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. She drained five three pointers.
Freshman
Summer Curtis broke her own school record by blocking nine shots. She pulled down nine rebounds and scored three points.
Janelle Murphy scored 12 points, including draining three three-pointers.
Naima Harrington scored eight points, all coming from the free throw line.
Chowan connected on seven of their first 11 shots, racing out to a 17-11 lead just five minutes, 26 seconds into the game. That lead ballooned to nine (24-15) at the 10:36 mark, following a
T'Arra Cutting trey.
The Lady Bears then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to three. With 4:10 remaining, Shaw's Buford made a layup to tie the game at 28. Chowan, however, never lost the lead. The Hawks ended the half on a 6-3 run, going into halftime with a 34-31 advantage.
Chowan extended their lead to 39-33 three minutes into the second half, but then hit a scoring drought. Over the next 10:09, the Hawks managed just three points. Shaw took their first lead since early in the first half when Brittany Ransom hit a three at the 13:05 mark.
The Lady Bears capped a 13-0 with 10 minutes remaining to go up 49-40. The Shaw advantage grew to 14 (61-47) with just under six minutes left to play. Chowan would not fold, though, and went on a 13-6 run of their own to pull within seven with 2:43 on the clock.
The Hawks cut the deficit to six with just 36 seconds to play, but could not get any closer.
Shaw out-rebounded Chowan 62-40, which included 29 offensive rebounds. They out-scored Chowan 36-12 in the paint and held a 49-14 advantage in bench points.
Chowan will return to action on Monday, January 16
th, when they host Saint Augustine's College in a CIAA cross-divisional match-up. Game time is 5:30pm.
