MURFREESBORO – For the first nine minutes of play, the Chowan offense went toe-to-toe with that of Winston-Salem State.  Then the Hawks went cold, and the Lady Rams pulled away for a 72-47 victory in the Helms Center.  With the loss, Chowan falls to 6-7 overall, and 1-2 in CIAA play.  The Lady Rams have now won six straight, and own a 9-5 overall record (4-0 CIAA).

After a quick 8-2 Winston-Salem State run to begin the contest, Chowan went ahead 11-10 at the 11:33 mark following a Ransheda Jennings free throw.  At that point, the Hawks began a shooting drought that spanned the majority of the remaining half.

Over the next 10:08, Chowan shot 0-13 from the floor.  When their offense went cold, though, the Hawks' defense picked up.  Despite the drought, Chowan found themselves trailing by just ten points with 1:25 remaining in the half, thanks to solid defense.  Over that same time span, Chowan held WSSU to only 5-19 shooting.

Janelle Murphy nailed a three-pointer at the 1:25 mark to close the deficit to 24-14, and that score would remain until halftime.

The second half started out much like the first half ended, though, for Chowan.  The Lady Rams went on a 12-2 run to open the half, gaining a 36-16 advantage with 14:04 remaining in the game.

Once again, Chowan's defense stepped up and their offense followed suit.  The Hawks went 6-6 at the free throw line over a 1:16 span to cut the deficit to 15 points, and then drained their next five shots from the floor, capping an 18-4 run.  With 8:36 remaining, the Lady Rams held just a 40-35 lead.

During the spurt, Chowan forced six WSSU turnovers and allowed just 2-4 shooting.  The Lady Rams bounced right back, however, with a 7-0 run of their own to open a 12 point lead.  That lead stretched to 19 points when Talyar Wells made two free throws at the 2:44 mark.

Winston-Salem State finished the game on a 12-5 run, sealing the road victory.

Talaya Lynch led all scorers with 20 points.  She also grabbed eight rebounds.  Summer Curtis had another solid defensive game, notching 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.  Ransheda Jennings dished out a game-high six assists.

Jasmine Newkirk led the Lady Rams with 18 points, while LaQuanda Williams recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Winston-Salem State shot 25-70 (35.7%) from the floor, including 51.6% in the second half.  They also connected on 17 of 21 free throw attempts.  Chowan went 14-30 at the charity stripe.

Chowan will next face the Lady Bears of Shaw University on Saturday, January 14th in a CIAA cross-divisional match-up.  Game time is set for 1:00pm.
