ETTRICK, VA – Ryan Moore hit his sixth home run of the season and earned a win on the mound as the Chowan University baseball team swept Virginia State University on Monday.  With the wins (5-2 and 10-5), the Hawks clinched the CIAA regular season title and extended their winning streak to 15 games.  Chowan finishes with a 29-14 record on the season and 25-3 in CIAA play.

The Trojans (20-25, 13-15 CIAA) put a run on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.  That cushion would hold until the fourth inning when Moore belted a home run to tie the game.

Neither team could manage a hit over the next two innings, but Chowan added a run in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead.  Adam Capps drove in Jordan Williams with a sacrifice fly to centerfield after Williams pinch-ran for Justin Bagbey who walked.

Virginia State responded with a run in the home half of the sixth to once again knot the score.  The Hawks tallied four hits in the top of the seventh, however, leading to three runs.  Josh Catalano, Brett Overton, and Ryan Moore collected RBI in the inning.

Moore (4-0) then shut down the Trojans in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.  He went 2-3 at the plate, with a team-high two RBI and two stolen bases.  Jordan Williams scored two runs and Brandon Mack had two hits for the Hawks.  They each stole one base as well.

Chowan struck first in game two when Colby Wiggins drove in Ryan Moore in the second inning.  The Hawks then erupted for four runs in the third inning to open up a 5-0 advantage.

Virginia State got on the board in the fourth inning to close the gap to 5-1.  Chowan responded in the top of the fifth with two runs to pull ahead 7-1.  Josh Catalano tallied both RBI in that inning.

The Trojans took advantage of three hits and two Chowan errors in the sixth to score three runs.  The Chowan half of the seventh inning also saw three runs scored.  Virginia State managed one run in their half of the seventh, but could not cap the comeback.

Brett Overton, Justin Bagbey, and Thomas Bird each collected two hits for Chowan.  Overton and Bird scored two runs apiece.  Josh Catalano, Ryan Moore, and Colby Wiggins each had two RBI.  Chowan hit five doubles as a team in the game.

Ryan Bradshaw (3-3) earned the win on the mound.  He went 4.0 innings, striking out five while allowing one run off three hits.

Chowan will now travel to Petersburg, VA for the CIAA Tournament, beginning Thursday, April 21st.
