Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC – A trio of Chowan pitchers held the Rams of Winston-Salem State University to just four hits in a pivotal CIAA doubleheader on Thursday. The Hawks won both games by scores of 4-1 and 4-0, respectively. Chowan improves to 23-3 in the CIAA and owns a 27-14 overall record. Winston-Salem State falls to 27-17 overall, 19-7 in CIAA play.
Adam Capps opened the scoring in game one with a double in the top of the third inning to score
Ryan Moore. The Rams responded in the home half of the fifth with a run to tie the game at 1-1. That score would remain until the seventh, and final, inning of the game.
John DesChamps (5-4) earned the win on the mound. He went 6.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits. He struck out three and allowed two walks.
Josh Catalano and
Ryan Moore each went 2-3 at the plate and scored one run.
The story of game two was the dominating performance on the mound by junior
Brett Garrett. He hurled a complete game one-hitter, striking out five and walking none.
After drawing walks at the plate,
William Ward and
Brandon Mack each scored in the top of the third to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage. Mack would walk and score again in the fifth off a
Brett Overton single.
Colby Wiggins walked and scored in the sixth to open up a 4-0 lead.
That lead would hold as Garrett did the rest.
Brett Overton had a team-high two RBI for Chowan.
Brandon Mack went 1-1 at the plate, including drawing two key walks. He had one RBI and scored one run.
Chowan will travel to Virginia State University on Saturday, April 16th to close out their CIAA regular season schedule. First pitch against the Trojans is set for 1:00pm.
