BELMONT, NC – Christie Wright earned a pair of wins and Chowan came through in extra innings in each game of a doubleheader sweep over Belmont Abbey College (14-26) on Sunday. The Hawks (29-17) took game one 5-3 and the nightcap 8-5.
Belmont Abbey struck first in game one with a run in the third inning. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when Lacey Wildeboer and Brenna Thomas crossed home plate.
The Crusaders regrouped in the sixth inning and added a run to tie the game a two runs apiece. Each team left the bases loaded in the seventh inning, squandering the chance to win in regulation.
Fahren Munro, Amber Matthews, and Lacey Wildeboer each came through with RBI in the top of the ninth inning to give Chowan a 5-2 advantage. Belmont Abbey made things interesting in the bottom half of the inning by scoring a run, but could not muster enough offense to extend the game.
Christie Wright pitched all nine innings, allowing seven hits while striking out 10 batters. Megan Wade and Alex Allen each went 2-4 at the plate. Lacey Wildeboer went 2-5 at the dish and recorded one RBI and scored one run.
The Crusaders again scored first in game two, opening up a 1-0 lead after two innings. Alex Allen drove in Katie Duncan in the third inning to tie the game at one.
Belmont Abbey regained the lead in the fourth inning, 2-1. From there, the game turned wild. The Hawks scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 advantage. Tricia Gorman had a two-RBI double and Liz Hipple drove in a run with a single in the frame.
Belmont Abbey came right back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at four, sending the game into extras. Megan Wade and Liz Hipple each belted home runs in the top of the eighth inning en route to a four-run frame.
Like the opener, the Crusaders responded by scoring a run, but Lacey Wildeboer earned the save on the mound by recording the final two outs of the game. Christie Wright (9-8) earned the win, pitching 2.1 innings in relief.
Megan Wade and Liz Hipple each went 2-4 at the dish and drove in two runs. Tricia Gorman also had two RBI. Allie Kolezynski went 2-4 and scored one run.
Chowan will travel to Bowie, MD for their final CIAA games of the season on Wednesday, April 13th. First pitch is set for 2:00pm.
