RICHMOND, VA – The Chowan softball team lengthened its CIAA winning streak to 10 games with a pair of victories over Virginia Union University on Tuesday. The Hawks needed only five innings in each game to defeat the Lady Panthers 12-2 and 15-1, respectively.

Chowan (23-15, 13-1 CIAA) scored five runs in the second inning in game one to open up a 6-0 advantage. The first four batters of the inning scored and the Hawks benefitted from two Lady Panther errors in the frame. Virginia Union (6-14, 3-9 CIAA) scored one run in the home half of the third inning to close the scoring gap to 6-1, but Chowan responded with two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning.

A Mindy Byrd home run down the right field line brought in the final three runs of the game. She finished the game going 2-2 at the plate and scoring two runs, to go along with those three RBI.

Allie Kolezynski, Fahren Munro, Megan Wade, and Alex Allen each scored two runs as well for the Hawks. Lacey Wildeboer earned the win on the mound, pitching all five innings and allowing two runs off seven hits.

Game two remained close throughout the first three innings of play. Three VUU errors in the first two innings led to the Hawks scoring four unearned runs. The Lady Panthers scored one run in the first inning.

Holding a 4-1 advantage heading into the fourth inning, Chowan erupted for seven runs in the frame. Fahren Munro belted a home run to drive in two runs and the Hawks drew four walks in the inning.

Chowan added four more runs in the fifth inning, thanks to a two-RBI double by Katie Duncan and a two-RBI single by Kayla Brady. Duncan went 3-4 at the plate, scoring two runs.

Christie Wright scored a team-high three runs and drew three walks at the dish. Amber Matthews pitched a complete game two-hitter. She struck out three and walked one.

Chowan will travel to St. Paul's College this Thursday, March 31st, to take on the Lady Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
