Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Baseball team fell for the first time in CIAA play this season after two losses to visiting Winston-Salem State University on Sunday. The Rams (14-8, 10-2 CIAA) took the opening game 2-0 and the nightcap 8-1. The Hawks offense never got going, as they managed only three hits in each game. With the two losses, Chowan now stands at 9-12 overall and 6-2 in the CIAA.
Game one saw excellent pitching from both sides, as only nine hits were registered between the two teams. The Rams managed to get on the board in the third inning when Andre Miller doubled in a run to make the score 1-0. Miller later stole home to give the Rams their second run of the game.
From there, neither offense could generate any scoring.
John DesChamps suffered the loss for the Hawks, despite striking out 11 and giving up 6 hits. Brice Rivenbark earned the win for WSSU. He went all 7 innings, striking out 11 and allowing 3 hits.

The Hawks struck first in game two, when
Colby Wiggins scored on a Rams error in the home half of the second inning. Chowan pitcher
Brett Garrett took care of the Rams until the sixth inning, when he gave up six runs. In all, Winston-Salem State scored eight runs in the inning off three hits.
The Rams added two more runs in the seventh inning and held on for the 8-1 victory.
Brett Garrett picked up the loss for Chowan, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up 4 earned runs off 6 hits. He struck out 8 batters. Tyler Hickernell earned the win for WSSU after going 5.0 innings, giving up 1 run off 2 hits and striking out 2 batters.
Colby Wiggins went 1-1 at the plate and scored the Hawks' only run.
Chowan will travel to Shaw University for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
