MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University Softball team fell to 0-6 on the short season following two losses to UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday. The Braves took the first game 8-7, while winning the finale 12-3. UNC-Pembroke improved to 3-1 with the victories.

In the opener, UNC-Pembroke jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning after a grand slam by 1b Lynn Grantham. Chowan pitcher Christie Wright settled down from there, holding the Braves scoreless over the next five innings. The Hawks cut the score to 4-1 in the bottom of the 4th before the Braves cut it back open in the top of the 7th with four runs to make the score 8-1.

Chowan mounted a furious comeback in the bottom of the 7th, starting with an Amber Matthews single to score Shelby PendletonFahren Munro, Tricia Gorman, Brooke Owen, and Mindy Byrd followed with RBI to bring the Hawks within one at 8-7. The offense could not finish the comeback, however, and UNC-P held on for the victory.

In the nightcap, UNC-Pembroke began much like game one. At the end of two, they held an 8-0 lead. They scored four more in the 3rd to open up a 10-0 cushion. Chowan scored two in the 4th and one in the 5th, but it was not enough as the Hawks fell innings. Megan Wade collected two hits in the losing effort. Lacey Wildeboer pitched in relief and struck out two over four innings.
