Ransheda Jennings Scores 1,000th Career Point to Lead Chowan to 54-52 Win over Bloomfield

Ransheda Jennings scored her 1,000th career point Sunday
Box Score

MURFREESBORO – Ransheda Jennings became the fourth Chowan player to score 1,000 career points in the Hawks' 54-52 victory over Bloomfield College on Sunday.  Jennings finished with a game-high 21 points, giving her 1,016 points for her career.

“What a special person, what a special student, and what a special player,” said Head Coach Patrick Mashuda.  “A 4.0 in the classroom and 1,000 points in the same semester – that's pretty amazing.  I am blessed every day to coach her.”

Jennings scored 14 of her 21 points in the first half, where she played all but one minute.  Freshman Summer Curtis had another solid game in the post, recording team-highs with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.  She also scored eight points.

Talaya Lynch notched 10 points, including Chowan's only two three-pointers.  She also grabbed four rebounds and had three steals.

After an early 6-0 spurt by Chowan (5-5) to open the game, Bloomfield regained the lead, 11-10, at the 11:44 mark when Dre'Shonda Williams drained a jumper.  The Hawks quickly responded, going on an 11-0 run over the next 3:15 to take a 21-11 advantage and take their largest lead of the contest.

Chowan's offense then went cold, connecting on just one field goal during the final eight minutes of the half.  The Lady Deacons (3-6) were able to capitalize, ending the half on a 12-4 run to pull within one, 28-27, at halftime.

Bloomfield maintained their momentum in the second half, beginning on an 8-2 run to take a 35-30 lead with 17:22 remaining in the game.  They would not be able to gain a lead larger than that, however, for the rest of the game.

Summer Curtis made sure of that.  Midway through the second half, Curtis recorded six rebounds, four points, and a blocked shot, all in a less than three minute span.  Her second of two layups gave Chowan a 41-39 lead with 11:09 to play.

A Janelle Murphy layup with 2:47 showing on the clock gave the Hawks a 52-45 advantage, but the Lady Deacons came storming back, going on a 7-2 run to make the score 54-52 with 48 seconds remaining.

After a missed three-pointer from Chowan, Bloomfield had the ball for the final possession, but Ivettlis Castro's three-point attempt fell just short.

“We had a slow start to the year but I am really proud of the program to be at .500 right now,” added Mashuda.  “It has been a while since we have been .500 at the Christmas break.”

Chowan, who came into the game holding their opponents to just 32.5% shooting from the floor, held Bloomfield to 28.3% shooting.  Neither team shot particularly well from the three-point line.  Chowan went 2-14 (14.3%), while Bloomfield shot 2-9 (22.2%).

Lauren Deverlin notched a double-double for Bloomfield with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Emily Hall led BC with 14 points before fouling out of the game with 1:08 remaining.

Chowan is off until January 4th, 2012, when they open up CIAA play at Johnson C. Smith University at 5:30pm.
