Box Score

WILSON, NC – The Chowan University Women's Basketball team fell to Barton College 72-69 in a frantic, back and forth game that came down to the final shot.  Unfortunately for the Hawks, it was Barton who made that final shot.

With the game tied at 69, Barton's Nyeshea Willie hit a three pointer with 17 seconds left in the game.  Chowan's three point attempt at the buzzer missed, and the Lady Bulldogs escaped with the three point victory.

Chowan falls to 1-4 with the loss, while the Lady Bulldogs improve to 2-1.

Barton, who was in the “receiving votes” category in this week's Division II national ranking, was led by Willie who tallied 20 points, including four three pointers.  Faith Hunter also nailed four threes for the Lady Bulldogs and scored 17 on the night.

Talaya Lynch had a monster game for Chowan.  She recorded a double-double early in the second half, and finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds.  She drained Chowan's only three pointers (three of them) and recorded three assists and one steal in 36 minutes of play.

Ransheda Jennings matched Lynch's 19 points on 8-16 shooting from the floor.  She also had five rebounds and three assists

Neither team shot particularly well in the fast-paced opening minutes.  Barton opened a 12-7 lead, their largest of the half, with 14:18 on the clock on back-to-back Faith Hunter three pointers.  As they did all half, though, the Hawks came right back with a run of their own and would tie the game at 15 on a Summer Curtis layup.

Barton took a 24-21 lead with 6:17 remaining in the game, but they would not score for the next 4:20.  During that drought, Chowan took their first lead of the game, 26-24, when Naima Harrington drained a layup.

A Lynch three-pointer at the 1:09 mark made the score 32-26 and gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the half.  They would go into halftime with a 34-30 lead.

Barton scored just three field goals in the final 9:29 of the first half, and shot 28.6% from the floor.  Chowan shot 35.3% and went 9-13 from the free throw line.

The Hawks opened the second half on fire offensively, connecting on their first eight shots leading to a 50-38 advantage.

The frantic Barton offensive then woke up.  At the 13:25 mark of the half, the Lady Bulldogs began a 15-0 run, keyed by Chowan turnovers, and took a 53-50 lead.

In a complete change of fortune, Chowan suddenly stopped the Barton attack and went on a 13-0 run of their own.  With 6:39 to play, the Hawks regained a ten point lead at 63-53.  Barton cut the lead to 66-65 with 3:33 remaining, and the teams battled back and forth until Willie's late-game heroics.

The two teams were nearly identical in statistics.  Each scored 24 points in the paint and had 11 second chance points.  Chowan committed 23 turnovers, while Barton coughed it up 22 times.

Chowan was averaging just 51.8 points per contest coming into the game.  They shot 39.1% from the floor, up from their 28.9% average coming in.

Chowan is off until next Tuesday, November 29th, when they host St. Andrews Presbyterian College at 5:30pm in the 2011-2012 home opener.
