MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Chowan University Women's basketball team dropped to 1-3 on the season following a 73-65 loss at Mount Olive College on Saturday.
Talaya Lynch scored 20 points, all in the second half, and
Janelle Murphy added 10, but the Hawks could not overcome a slow start and poor shooting first half.
Only four minutes into the game, Mount Olive (2-1) owned a 12-3 lead. At the 10:27 mark of the first half, that lead ballooned to 22-3. Chowan was just 1-11 from the floor and committed 11 turnovers over that opening span.
The Hawks settled down, though, and got to the free throw line throughout the final portion of the first half. Chowan took all 12 of their first half free throw attempts in the final eight minutes, converting on nine of them.
Two free throws by
Ransheda Jennings with 2:41 on the clock brought Chowan within 11 at 28-17, but that was as close as they would get in the half. Chowan outscored Mount Olive 13-6 over the last eight minutes to make the halftime score 32-18.
Chowan shot 4-23 (17.4%) in the first half and committed 17 turnovers. They were just 1-9 from beyond the arc.
The second half was a different story. Chowan matched their first half field goal total, 4, just 3:23 into the second frame. The Hawks hit six of their first ten shots, including 3-5 from three-point territory, to pull within eight at 42-34.
Mount Olive responded, though, and did not let Chowan get any closer. With 4:58 remaining, the Trojans opened up a 60-44 lead. Chowan had one more run in them, however, to make things interesting. Lynch drained three three-pointers over the next 2:13 to make the score 63-57. Lynch was 4-6 in three-point attempts in the second half.
Mount Olive made six free throws in the final 1:01 of the game to maintain their slight lead and come away with the victory.
Chowan scored 47 points in the second half on 16-33 shooting (48.5%). They were 6-11 from three-point land as well. Lynch and freshman
Summer Curtis led Chowan with six rebounds apiece for the game.
Four Trojans scored in double figures. Andrea Jones led the way with 20, while Tamara Nesmith and Jasmine McDonald each recorded double-doubles.
Chowan will return to action on Tuesday, November 22
nd, when they travel to Barton College for a 5:30pm tip-off.
