MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Men's and Women's Basketball teams will begin a six-game home stand tomorrow afternoon as they host Virginia Union University in CIAA Divisional matchups. Women will tip-off at 2:00pm, with the Men's game to follow at 4:00pm in the Helms Center. 

 

The Chowan Women sit atop the CIAA North Division with a 3-0 record (8-9 overall, 5-4 CIAA), and look to continue their winning streak. The Hawks have won their last three games, and four of five overall. Their current streak is the longest since January of 2010. Junior Ransheda Jennings is averaging just over 20 points over the last three games, while shooting 29-37 (78%) from the free throw line. Chowan's defense has also played a huge role in their recent success, holding their opponents to an average of under 50 points per contest.

 

Virginia Union comes into the game with a 0-13 record (0-6 CIAA, 0-1 North). They are coming off an 80-67 loss at Saint Paul's College on Monday night.

 

On the men's side, the Hawks (1-16, 0-9 CIAA, 0-3 North) continue to look to earn their first CIAA win of the season.  They are coming off an 83-72 loss at Elizabeth City State University on Thursday night, despite a hot start in which they led 15-8. Chowan currently ranks 5^th in the CIAA in field goal percentage (.437), 4^th in steals (8.2 per game), and tied for 2^nd in assists (13.9 per game). Mark Brown and Charles Rhodes are leading the team in scoring, averaging 10.8 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. 

 

The Panthers of Virginia Union enter tomorrow's game with a 7-6 overall record (5-3 CIAA, 2-1 North). They are coming off a 71-56 loss at Saint Paul's College Monday night. Brandon Smith led the Panthers with 16 points.
