Box Score BOWIE, MD – The Chowan Hawks Men's Basketball team remained winless in CIAA play after a 101-83 loss at Bowie State University Saturday night. The Bulldogs (11-3, 6-1 CIAA, 1-0 North) grabbed six early offense rebounds, en route to opening the game on a 9-2 run. They would not look back from there, widening the scoring gap to 21 at the 9:31 mark of the first half. Chowan (1-14, 0-7 CIAA, 0-1 North) showed its grit, however, and cut the lead down to eight with just under three minutes remaining in the half. The Hawks shot 10-14 from the free throw line during the stretch. The game remained within reach, as the Bulldogs took at 54-42 lead into intermission.
The second half began much like the first, with a Bowie State run to take a 19 point lead at the 15:44 mark of the second half. Once again, the Hawks responded with a surge of their own, cutting the score to 67-55 with just over 13 minutes remaining. This was the closest Chowan would get, however, as the Bulldogs pulled away late in the second half, securing the home victory.
The Hawks went to the free throw line an astonishing 47 times throughout the game, connecting on 29 of them. Chowan never led in the game, and was led by Senior
Travis Williams who had a career day at the line, knocking down all 10 attempts he took. Williams also notched a team high 15 points in the loss. Also scoring in double figures for the Hawks were Sophomore
Deandre Tyree (13) and Senior
Charles Rhodes (10).
Bowie State was led by Eric Vann who tallied 22 points. Byron Westmorland chipped in with 20 points and a game high 9 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Chowan travels to Lincoln University (PA) Monday night for a 7:30 tip-off against the 1-13 Bears. Next for Bowie State is a Monday night trip to Elizabeth City to take on the 11-4 Vikings.
