MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Hawks lost to the visiting Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College in CIAA Cross-Divisional action Thursday night 77-73. The loss drops Chowan to 5-8 overall, with a 2-4 CIAA record. A late fury by Chowan was not enough, as Livingstone hit numerous clutch free throws down the stretch. The Hawks were led once again by junior
Ransheda Jennings, who tallied 26 points to go along with 8 rebounds. Chowan had four players score in double figures, as
Talaya Lynch notched 14,
Danielle Coleman scored 13, and
Najah Harris tallied 10.
Jennings put up 16 first half points and helped the Hawks to more than half a dozen leads in the first twenty minutes of play. The first half alone featured seven ties and 14 lead changes but it was the Lady Blue Bears who would take a narrow 43-37 lead into the halftime break. Behind the play of Brittany Wright, Livingstone was able to build on that lead in the second half, getting up by as many as 10 points. The Hawks battled to keep the game close but were forced to foul late in the game. Wright led all scrorers in the game with 30 points. She also hauled in 12 rebounds. The Lady Blue Bears took advantage of their size in the paint, out rebounding Chowan 51 to 40. They had 20 offensive boards alone.
Jennings had an all around night for Chowan with 26 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
The Lady Blue Bears were led by Brittany Wright, who poured in 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Livingstone also had four players score in double figures. The win lifts the Lady Bears to a 9-3 overall record, and 4-1 in the CIAA.
Chowan travels to Bowie State this Saturday to take on the 7-5 Lady Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm. The Lady Blue Bears will also play this Saturday, as they travel to Johnson C. Smith University for a 5:30pm tip-off.
