RALEIGH, NC - The Chowan University Hawks dropped their second game in a row after suffering a 52-47 loss at Shaw University tonight in CIAA divisional cross over action. The Hawks took a three point lead into halftime and erased a ten point second half deficit to stay in the game late, but Shaw used key free throws down the stretch to pick up their 10th win of the season. Chowan falls to 4-8 and 1-3 in the CIAA after tonights game.
The low scoring game saw just one player from each team score in double figures. The Hawks hit shots at a 27% clip tonight and struggled from three point land, hitting just 6 of 28 shots taken.
Ransheda Jennings led all scorers with 17 points. She also had four steals in the game. Janell Murphy chipped in nine points off the bench for Chowan.
Trailing 40-30 with 8:51 to play in the game, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to cut into the Lady Bears lead. Shaw kept the Hawks at arms length over the final minutes of the game to take the five point victory. Shaw's Kyria Buford scored a team-high 13 points.
Chowan (4-8, 1-3) will travel to Saint Augustine's College on Monday night in their next outing. Tip off for that game is set for 5:30pm. Shaw will host Elizabeth City State on Monday night in their next outing.
