MURFREESBORO - Chowan University's women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2010 season after rolling to a 64-39 win over Bluefield State College in a non-conference matchup. The Hawks scored 23 points off of Bluefueld State turnovers and got 19 points from
Talaya Lynch to help propel them to the victory. Chowan (1-3) scored 28 points from the foul line and held the Lady Blues to 29% from the floor in the game. Chowan will take off until December 2nd when they host Saint Augustine's in a non-conference game.
Chowan took control early in the game. After a first score by the Lady Blues in the second minute of the game, the Hawks never lost the lead, spreading their lead to as many as 27 in the second half.
The Hawks hit 47% (9-19) from the floor in the first half to take a 34-21 lead into the break. Chowan took advantage of their trips to the foul line, hitting for 28 of their 64 total points from the charity stripe. Lynch hit 9-10 from the foul line and was 4-11 from the floor for a game-high 19 points. She had two assists, two steals, and four boards in the win.
Brittany Nicholson contributed nine points and had five steals while
Ransheda Jennings had four assists.
For Bluefield State, Charlene Diggs put up 12 points while Kateisha Wright chipped in eight points. BSC falls to 1-2 on the year after tonight's game. They will return home to host Ohio Valley University on November 30th.
The Hawks will return home on December 2nd to host Saint Augustine's College in a non-conference game. That tip is set for 5:30pm at the Helms Center.
