Box Score RALEIGH, NC - Chowan's three-game win streak came to an end tonight after running into the Shaw University Bears. The Bears racked up 511 yards of offense in route to a 35-14 win over the visiting Hawks. Chowan picked up 321 yards of offense on 69 plays but were held to under a hundred yards on the ground in the game. Chowan falls to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA while Shaw improves their overall record to 6-2 and remain perfect at 5-0 in the CIAA.
Chowan started the game strong after taking their opening drive to paydirt.
Patrick Charles set the Hawks up with a 41 yard kick off return to open the game. Eddie Coard caught a 40 yard pass from
Ryan Simpson to get the Hawks a full set of downs inside the Bears five yard line.
Elliot Smalls , playing in front of his hometown and on his former high school's field, rushed the ball in from two yards out to get the Hawks on the board first.
Matt Lucas gave Chowan a 7-0 lead after nailing the point after attempt.
But after that score, the Bears went to work on both sides of the ball. They managed to keep Chowan out of the endzone again until late in the fourth quarter and went on to score five touchdowns, four of which were unanswered.
Simpson continues to be a bright spot in the Hawks offense. He completed 17 of 31 passes for 226 yards and an interception. He also had a nine-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Robert Holland notched his fourth straight 100+ yard game after hooking up with Simpson eight times for 109 receiving yards.
Defensively the Hawks were led by
Leon Eason who had seven tackles (3 solo, 4 assisted).
Tony Goodman and Marcus Johnson came in with five tackles each.
Chowan has two regular season games left on the schedule with Elizabeth City State next Saturday at Roebuck Stadium. Kick off is set for 1:30pm in Elizabeth City. They will wrap up the regular season with the annual Hall of Fame game against Bowie State on November 6th. The Vikings and the Hawks are currently tied for 3rd place in the CIAA Northern Division.
