Box Score RICHMOND, VA - Virginia Union University scored 21 third quarter points to outlast the visiting Hawks 45-27 in CIAA play this afternoon. The Hawks remain winless at 0-5 on the year after today's loss. After the Hawks took a narrow 20-14 lead into the halftime period, the Panthers put up 21 third quarter points to take the game out of reach for Chowan.
Cory Cline drilled a 42 yard field goal at the 6:49 mark of the first quarter to put Chowan on the board. Cline's field goal cut in to the Panther's lead at 6-3. Just under two minutes later CJ Westler connected with Robert Holland for a 37 yard score. After a Cline point after attempt kick is good, Chowan took a 10-6 lead over VUU. Mickey Jenkins set up another Chowan score after he intercepted a VUU pass. Westler stuck it in from one yard out for another score and a 17-6 lead. VUU would score another time before Cline kicked a 41 yard field goal for a 20-14 lead at the half.
The Panthers came to play in the second half as they scored 21 third quarter points. Westler connected with Holland in the fourth quarter but the damage was done and Chowan fell with the final score 45-27.
Westler completed 27 out of 45 passes for 290 yards. He tossed two touchdowns and rushed for another in the game. Holland caught 13 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
Defensively Chowan was led by Jeremy Bednardz-Gray with eight tackles. Greg Palmer added seven tackles in the loss.
Chowan will host Fayetteville State University on October 3rd in their next outing. They fall to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA.
